Friday May 25th The Mousetrap

When Mike Daisey heard that someone had found test photos inside new iphones, he was intrigued. He had always assumed that Apple devices were made by robots. Who was it that made millions of these gadgets? He went to China to find out. Out of his trip came the monologue which he has been performing since 2010, a witty and irreverent piece full of humor and spicy language. In it Daisey weaves the tapestry of his passion for electronic gadgets with stories about Steve Jobs, our manic lust for Apple products and the inhumane conditions under which those devices are made in China. Daisey admits to making composites, rearranging events and embellishing details of his trip to Shenzhen. "But," as Ruth Franklin of The New Republic says, "very little - and this is important - seems actually to be untrue. ... No one disputes that he got the basics of the story right: Foxconn's deplorable treatment of its employees." Given the compelling nature and dramatic immediacy of this piece, Pilar Saavedra-Vela, with the generous collaboration of Ann Antkiw, adapted the monologue to a staged reading by five actors. Cast members include Barbara Adams, Ron Boston, Lisa DeFuso, Laurie Gould Blizzard, Tom Humes, Susan Liang, and Vicky Longland.
